One of the examples of large-tonnage environmentally hazardous waste are used industrial rubber articles e.g. car tires, conveyer belts, hoses, etc. Methods of disposal currently in use are environmentally dangerous. In this paper we offer the utilization technology of rubbers by exposing them to concentrated sulphuric acid which causes their degradation. We present the mechanism of process which includes the serial formation of sulphoacids, sulfoxides and sulfones and bond breaking carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogenium, that as a result leads to formation of a carbonaceous material with the residual content of hydrogenium less than 0,1 % (weight). Technological parameters of process – a temperature schedule and kinetic characteristics of process – activation energy and decomposition rate of rubber are determined. The option of the process flow sheet providing operations of a refinement of rubber, its destruction by sulfuric acid and regeneration of the last by oxidation of being allocated sulfur dioxide is offered. The degradation product, carbon-base material, can be used as the sorbent of petroleum derivatives and heavy nonferrous metal ions and also as a component of building materials and a reducer in metallurgical processes.
Keywords: end-of-life tires; sulphuric acid; destruction; carbon material.
