The article presents the brief analysis of the environmental monitoring on city streets and at city street crossings. The drawbacks of the existed methods and the monitoring devices are indicated. The article suggests a new solution for the environmental monitoring systems that is to install video cameras in them. The outcome of the experiment shows high correlation between the image contrast of the test object and the mass of the weighed particles in the atmospheric air. The problem of the sunlight influence on the observed data is indicated. The research has studied the correlation between the changes in the contrast of two images in the infrared light-emitting diodes and the amount of little dispersed and highly dispersed smoke. The outcome of the experiment shows exponential correlation between the changes in the contrast and the amount of smoke. It also brings to light the fact of differences in exponential quantities depending on dispersion states of particles. Thus, the possibility of video camera usage for environmental monitoring systems is proved.
