Kolesnikova, E.A. Pozdnyakova, E.S. Konkova, M.S. Aleksandrova Integrated background monitoring network (IBMoN) is operating at the territory of the Russian Federation. The main tasks of the IBMoN are to assess the global and regional levels of environmental pollution. Following air pollutants are monitored at the network sites: sulfur and nitrogen species, heavy metals, POP’s, etc. Last decades the problem of aerosol particles was closely studied Nowadays, the determination of the aerosol sulfates content at the IBMoN is providing according to the system developed in the early 1970s. The sampling procedure is carried out by means of Petryanov’s fi lter. Photocolorimetric method of analysis is used to determine sulfate concentrations. However, in worldwide practice, the recommended method for aerosol sulfates determination is ion chromatography method (IC).The standard sample preparation method of Petryanov’s filter, applied at IBMoN, is not suitable for IC measurements of sulfates in aerosols. The paper presents a comparative experiment on the effectiveness of various sample preparation and sulfates extraction methods applicable to aerosol particles at Petryanov’s filters. An initial assessment of used procedures success and their applicability for the analysis by ion chromatography method is carried out.
