DEVASTATING EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI IN INDONESIA SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 |
I.V. Remizov
Based on the seismic data of the earthquake that occurred on September 28, 2018 near the Sulawesi Island (Indonesia), as well as on the complex geodynamics of this region – the Sulawesi Island is located in the triple junction of the Australian, Philippine and Zunda plates, a numerical simulation of this event was carried out within the framework of keyboard model of an underwater earthquake. Based on the location of the aftershocks, the localization of the earthquake source was determined and the generation and propagation of tsunami waves was simulated. The distribution of the maximum tsunami wave heights along the Sulawesi coast on the 3-m isobath is obtained. A comparison is made with the data of works of other authors and with fi eld data. The analysis of the possible impact of underwater landslides during the implementation of this earthquake is carried out. On the assumption that the Sulawesi tsunami in 2018 could have been caused by some other mechanism than seismic one. It was found that the seismic process could cause the movement of a large underwater landslide, which contributed to the intensification of the Sulawesi tsunami.
