EXPLORATORY DATA ANALYSIS OF RIVER WATER CHARACTERISTICS |

Using "Exploratory data analysis" of hydrological characteristics has been proposed with an example of river water flow and water quality indicators on the Ob river. It is shown that the sets of measurement results are often nonhomogenous. As a result, the average annual characteristics of the monitored indicators, included usually into the Government reports, can turn out to be non-informative. It is also shown that if it is necessary to use a normal distribution function for some purposes, it is necessary to divide the measurement sets into homogeneous sections, although it is more expedient to use the probability laws with long right "tails". Almost unambiguous and sufficiently strong correlations between some studied indicators have been revealed. This makes it possible to reduce the volume of measurements and redirect the released resources to the analysis of possible mechanochemical correlations in the river flow, for example, between water consumption and its quality indicators.
