BLUE-GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT: CASE STUDY OF THE CITY VOLOGDA |

Flooding in cities causes annual damage in billions of dollars to urban infrastructure and poses a threat to the population and their property. Traditional engineering solutions for stormwater management in modern conditions are becoming inefficient and unprofitable. One of the ways to solve the problem of excess stormwater in cities is creating a blue-green infrastructure. The paper examines the case study of city Vologda. Our research has revealed there are risks of flooding in the area and both the residents and the authorities are interested in finding soft solutions. The research discovered that the existing blue-green infrastructure of the studied area is poorly developed and cannot cope with stormwater during heavy precipitation. Taking into account climatic, terrain features and the state of existing vegetation, the optimal combination of elements of blue-green infrastructure for Vologda was proposed.
