APPROXIMATE ESTIMATES OF THE FORCE IMPACT OF BAROCLINIC FLOWS ON CYLINDRICAL SUPPORTS IN THE CONDITIONS OF THE SAKHALIN SHELF |

The classical and the refined Morison formulas are used in this work to find estimates of the internal waves’ force effect on cylindrical supports located on the shelf of the Sakhalin Island. The refi nement consists in using the total material derivative with respect to time in the inertial component. The precalculated velocity fields were obtained by modeling the dynamics of internal waves in two sections within the framework of the fully nonlinear SUNTANS model, based on the system of Navier-Stokes equations in the Boussinesq approximation. It is shown that the classical and the refined Morison formulas give estimates of the same order in magnitude, but the structure of the time series of shear force and moment, as well as the sign of these quantities, may differ. Graphs of the vertical distribution of speed and inertial intensities were constructed. The inertial components are even qualitatively significantly different in the classical and the refi ned formulation, that is apparently due to the complex, nonlinear structure of the velocity field.
