Interdecadal Changes in the Thermohaline Structure
and Density Stratifi cation of the Waters
of the Sea of Okhotsk According to the International
Climatological Atlas WOA23 |

Based on the temperature and salinity data for three climate normals (1971–2000, 1981–2010, 1991–2010) from the
international hydrological atlas WOA23, interdecadal changes in the thermohaline structure and density stratification of the
waters of the Sea of Okhotsk were investigated. It is shown that there is no pronounced time trend in changes in temperature,
salinity, and density of seawater for the entire Sea of Okhotsk, but a general increase in average temperatures, reaching
0.3 °C and visible to a depth of 1000 m, over the period covering the three considered climate normals is observed. At the
same time, multidirectional changes in temperature and salinity according to the data for three decades lead to interdecadal
fluctuations of different signs for seawater density anomalies, and similar small changes in average densities and in the
stratification index of seawater; these fl uctuations over the considered 30-year periods do not yet lead to a qualitative change
in baroclinic wave regimes.
