Main functional components and energy sources of the biotic mechanisms of water self-purification in water bodies and streams are analyzed.. New steps in conceptualization of the mechanisms are made. According to the concept proposed, the functional components of the system for self-purification include subsystems that function as filters, pumps, mills, sorbents and other important elements of the biomachinery for natural water remediation in aquatic ecosystems.
