Galvanotacxis protozoa and prospects of its biotechnology usage

One of the most common negative results of human activity on nature is extensive pollution. Large areas are contaminated by various toxic substances creating a risk for any agricultural work, not to mention the wild life. Therefore, the study and development of express bioassay methods for estimating the toxicity of different substances is very important. In this paper we considered the possibility of regulating moving Peramecium cells placed in a toxic solution by galvanotaxis and automatically controlling cells’ movement using an electronic-optical method in order to obtain a characteristic response. We found the optimal conditions for the analysis of toxicity of different aqueous solutions by this method. We proposed the basic parameters of a test system (age of culture, the concentration of cells in specimen) to produce an effective response and to eliminate any random responses.
