Abnormalities in Daphnia magna offspring induced
by light-emitting diode radiation |
Vorobyova O.V.
The effect of a device generating light-emitting diode radiation (650 nm, 0,9 mW/cm2) on survival, fecundity, and offspring quality of the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna Straus was studied. An exposure of one day old crustaceans to a single radiation pulse (0,1 s, 1 s, 60 s or 300 s) was shown to have no effect on crustaceans’ survival during the following 21 days of the experiment. Nevertheless, such an exposure influenced Daphnia fecundity and induced embryogenesis disturbances in subsequent unirradiated generations. Among seasons the observed effects are reproduced qualitatively, however quantitatively they are not stable.
Keywords: Daphnia magna; LED light; fecundity; embryogenesis disturbance; hydrobionts.
