Using of stone molding containers for storage

The formation and accumulation of significant radioactive waste amounts with different radionuclide composition and level of specific activity are currently stored in relevance of their storage and disposal, and involves the creation of different ways of processing and manufacture of new types of equipment and installations. One of the areas that is regarded by many experts as a major for the disposal of high level waste is vitrification. Vitrified waste is placed in containers that have to meet certain requirements. One of the most promising materials for the manufacture of containers is a stone molding having radiation and corrosion resistance, water resistance, a property not to collapse under the influence of temperature in the range 400…500 ºС, good formability. However, when vitrified radioactive waste placed in stonecast containers are formed in the internal thermal stress or stress due to different forms of glass block and the inner cavity of the container. To eliminate these disadvantages is proposed to conduct lining the inside of the container with mineral wool. The paper considers the question of cover joining to the container and the construction of a pilot plant for welding the cover to the container.
