Gorohova I.N. Konyushkova M.V. In the paper, the relevance of the study and monitoring of salt-affected soils in the south of Russia and adjacent regions is discussed. The experience in remote sensing investigation of soil salinization of irrigated cotton fields in Central Asia and alfalfa in the Volgograd region, as well as virgin soil solonetzic complexes in semi-arid zone of the Caspian Lowland is shown in the paper, which can be the basis for creating the monitoring system of soil salinization in the south of Russia. Approaches to improve the assessment and monitoring of saline soils using modern high-resolution space imagery and the latest technologies of their processing, primarily, digital mapping, that will help update and clarify the data on the properties, areas and regions with saline soils in the south of Russia are described in the paper.
