In the paper the study of spontaneously arisen, rapidly developing combustion centers in the dumps of coal mines is discussed that was made to develop recommendations to extinguish, as well as to predict both immediate and long-term outcomes of occurring geotechnical processes in the heaps. Solved the problem of non-contact spatial localization of combustion centers, which do not always coincide with the geometric output of heat on the surface, and of the soils section division into separate layers with different lithological composition for the prediction of the combustion centers development without the use of expensive and dangerous drilling.
