TRANSFORMATION OF THE BAROCLINIC TIDAL WAVE AND THE STRUCTURE OF THE INDUCED FLOW IN THE SHELF OF THE SEA OF OKHOTSK
O.E. Kurkina, A.A. Kurkin, E.A. Ruvinskaya, A.R. Giniyatullin

To study the peculiarities of the baroclinic tidal wave transformation on the shelf of Sakhalin Island (in the hydrocarbon production zone), we simulated this process within the framework of the Gardner equation for the Sea of Okhotsk conditions according to the climatologic atlas GDEM. The upper bounds for the amplitudes of the solitons generated from the tidal wave are obtained. For July, the maximum observed soliton amplitude was 35 m, while only solitons of negative polarity are generated because of seasonal features of density stratifi cation. An important characteristic of the generated wave fi eld is substantial amplifi cation of amplitudes of internal waves in the nearshore zone. The structure of the near-bottom velocity fi eld is discussed, as well as the vertical structure of the currents induced by internal waves. It is shown that near-shore near-bottom velocity reaches 0,2 m/s, while near-surface flows have velocities of the order of 0,3…0,4 m/s. These bottom currents are able to provide transport of bottom sediments to a deep-water zones. Since the Sea of Okhotsk is located in the midlatitudes, the effect of rotation on simulation results is estimated (the Gardner-Ostrovsky equation is used). It is shown that taking into account of rotation leads to a later generation of solitons and to a decrease of their number, as well as to an increase in their length, and a decrease in their amplitude. It affects the estimates of the parameters of the flows induced by such waves.
