CHEMICAL INTERACTIONS OF RED MUD DURING THE PURIFICATION OF INDUSTRIAL GASES EMITTED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE FROM HARMFUL IMPURITIES |

There are two major chemical and technological problems that can be solved simultaneously with a significant environmental and economic effect. The first of these is the need for complete processing of red mud (RM). The second is to reduce emissions of toxic gases from industrial plants. The urgency of solving the first problem has sharply increased after a major environmental disaster in Hungary in 2010. It was destroyed the fencing of the sludge storage dam. The risks of a repetition of such a catastrophe are increasing due to the increasing frequency of natural disasters. This paper shows that these tasks can be solved by applying a multicomponent, chemical composition, RM, which is able to interact with toxic gaseous sulfur compounds and remove them from the composition, industrial waste gases. The results of laboratory tests are confirmed by industrial tests. Identified chemical and thermodynamic capacity of the material. Experimental evidence and relevant characteristics are given, as applied to gas emissions from industrial heat and power plants, steelmaking and sintering production.
