CONTROL OF CYANOBACTERIA WITH THE USE OF ZOOPLANKTON IN AN EXPERIMENTAL ECOSYSTEM |

The excessive input of nutrients leads to cyanobacterial blooming, which makes water bodies unusable. In this context, the use of the potential of the mass species of filtering zooplankton for effective control of blooming and for enhancing biological self-purification is an important and necessary condition for recovering natural water quality. The trophic press of fish and cyanobacterial blooming leads to depletion of the species composition of filtering plankton in the pond and a decrease in its biomass. Experimental flow-through ecosystems in a water body isolate zooplankton-consuming fish thus causing an increase in the abundance and biomass of large-size zooplankton and improvement of its production characteristics (organism size and fertility). The intensity of consumption of alga and cyanobacteria by zooplankton increases. At the blooming of cyanobacteria Anabaena spiroides in the pond, the biomass of Daphnia magna in the experimental ecosystem reaches 883 mg/L. This results in a decrease in cyanobacteria biomass in the ecosystem from 39 to 14 mg/L within one hour. Predatory invertebrates entering the experimental installations can completely eliminate crustaceans and reduce the operation efficiency.
