THE EXPERIENCE OF USING THE GEORADOLOCATION METHOD TO DETERMINE THE LAYERS OF SNOW WITH THE HELP OF GPR «OKO-2» |

The paper describes an experiment to determine the layers of snow by the method of georadolocation using the GPR «OKO-2». The georadar method is based on the phenomenon of reflection of electromagnetic waves from the interface of surfaces on which electrical properties change. The electrical properties of ice and snow differ depending on its characteristics, so there is a possibility of indicating snow layers by georadiolocation. This would make it possible to use this method to identify snow layers involved in the formation of avalanches. Such a method would make it possible to avoid finding the researcher in an avalanche-prone zone when working in snow pits necessary for predicting avalanches and estimating their volumes. As a result of the work, it turned out that snow layers are visually determined on the received radar image after processing it in a special Geo Scan 32 program. The results are confirmed by checking with the help of reflectors placed on the border of the snow layers in the form of foiled fiberglass. The refl ector is a marker that allows you to accurately detect the boundary of the layers on the radar image. Previously, it can be noted that the layers of snow thickness defined on the radarogram differ in structure, humidity and temperatures. Experiments were also conducted to determine the thickness of the snow cover, which showed high accuracy of such measurements.
