RESULTS OF USING GEORADIOLOCATION METHOD TO INDICATE THE LAYERS OF SNOW |

In this paper, the authors reflect the results of testing a GPR (ground-penetrating radar) to indicate the layers of snow and determine their properties, which make it possible to use for prediction of avalanche danger. The tests of the GPR were carried out in the winter season of 2021/2022. Trenches were dug in the snow, in the wall of which long metal rods (markers) were installed, which are reflectors for the GPR and allow the boundaries of layers to be distinguished on the radarogram. As a result of the GPR sounding of the snow cover, radargrams were obtained, on which the layered structure of the snow is read. Using the GeoScan32 software, the values of dielectric permittivity for 19 layers of snow thickness that differ in properties. A correlation was obtained between dielectric permittivity and temperature, crystal diameter, density of snow layers, and water content of snow layers. The obtained permittivity dependences reveal the closest connections between dielectric permittivity and density while the correlation coeffi cient is higher for dry snow than for wet snow. The values of the dielectric permittivity obtained using GPR were also compared with the calculated values obtained from a number of empirical ratios of it with the density of snow.
