Borisov The results of studying the features of unrest in the coastal zone of the southwest coast of the island are described. Sakhalin in the area of Nevelsk and Gornozavodsk using field observations. According to the graphs of the spectral density of level fluctuations in the range of wind waves and swell, five wave processes were identifi ed in the water area of the Nevelsky port and three for Gornozavodsk. It is shown that the presence of several such peaks in spectral densities is associated with local topography nonlinearities in the observation areas. Analysis of the level fluctuations in the area of Gornozavodsk showed the presence of three broad spectral peaks corresponding to long-wave processes and having a local nature. Four wave processes have been identifi ed, which are manifested both for observations in Gornozavodsk and Nevelsk. It is shown that one may belong to an offshore seiche, and all of them are edge waves. Calculation of the periods of the Seish Tatar Strait showed that for its water area bounded by Lopatin cape and Lamanon cape, the period of the zero mode seish is close to the peak detected in the spectra, and with this period, seish and edge waves can simultaneously exist, which, coming into the resonant water area, can contribute to the generation of seish. Using the dispersion relation for continental shelf waves, it is shown that two relatively weak peaks detected in the spectral density graphs of sea level fluctuations are caused by shelf waves.
