Shabramova This paper presents the results of field studies and measurements of the underlying surfaces in seismically and volcanically active zones of the Kuril Islands in order to form a database of subject-specifi c features and spectral characteristics for information support of satellite data processing services. There are magmatic and mud volcanoes on the Kuril Islands, including active and potentially active ones. Volcanic eruptions have an exceptionally strong impact on the environment. Due to the occurrence of active seismic and volcanic processes in these areas, a variety of landscape complexes are formed with a specifi c climatic regime, relief, geological and geochemical conditions, etc. In conditions of such diversity and variability of landscapes, high quality remote sensing of the earth can only be ensured if there are reference data on subject-specific features and spectral characteristics for a sufficiently large number of areas. The formation of such a database of spectral signatures and subject-specifi c characteristics of objects on the earth's surface is a necessary element of an information system that signifi cantly improves the quality of processing satellite data from remote sensing of the earth in seismically and volcanically active zones.
