LONG WAVES IN THE AREA OF THE SOUTHERN KURIL ISLANDS

The results of long waves studies with periods from 1 to 70 hours, performed using time series of oscillations in sea level and water temperature with 1 s discreteness measured in the area of the southern islands of the Kuril ridge Kunashir and Urup using autonomous wave recorders ARW-K14, are described. The spectral analysis of the time series of level oscillations revealed wave processes with periods of about 12, 12.4, 23.8 and 25.9 hours, which have the highest energy and are the main tidal harmonics S2, M2, φ1 and O1. The explanation of wave processes with periods of more than 21 hours is given with numerical modeling using the dispersion relation for waves of the continental shelf with an exponential profile of the seabed, which showed that the detected spectral peaks can be attributed to shelf waves. The analysis of wave processes with periods from 3.4 to 12.3 hours detected in the spectral densities of sea level oscillations near Cape Lovtsov and Cape Van Der Lind using the dispersion relation for edge Stokes waves in the approximation of a fl at inclined bottom showed that wave processes with periods from 3.4 to 12.3 hours can be edge trapped waves. Using the simulation methods tested the possibility of generating seiches of the Sea of Okhotsk with periods of 3.4 to 12.3 hours, which showed that the detected wave processes can also be seiches, and part of their energy contributes to the generation of edge waves. Spectral analysis of time series of water temperature showed the presence of internal waves with periods of diurnal tidal harmonics, which can be generated by a barotropic tide flowing along the bottom relief. It follows from the analysis that the periods of internal waves in the range from 4.8 to 11.9 are close to the periods of seiches generated by atmospheric disturbances or wind, which indicates the transfer of part of their energy to internal waves. There are no peaks corresponding to inertial periods in the spectra of sea level and temperature oscillations, which is consistent with the conclusion of the universal model of the internal wave spectrum of Garrett and Mank.
