Comparison of Separation Processes of Heavy
and Light Particles of Suspensions in a Settling Tank
at Pressure and Non-Pressure Flows |

The process of gravitational wet separation of suspensions and emulsions containing particles and drops with density of higher and
lower density of liquid phase is considered. Formulas are derived for local degree of purifi cation of fractions with size of dispersed phase
smaller than design nominal diameter, i.e. particles and droplets captured by 100 %. The sedimentation or surfacing rate of these particles
determines the settler surface. The results of settling tank calculation at pressure and pressure-free movements of liquid phase (heavy
liquid) in settling tank on the example of copper ore sludge. The advantage of pressure fl ow is shown when capturing light particles fl oating
in a heavy liquid, compared to a non-pressure one, but requiring signifi cantly high energy consumption.
Keywords: degree of purifi cation, dispersed fractional composition, rate of deposition and surfacing, settler surface, pressure and pressurefree motion, copper ore, empty rock.
