A Combined Approach to Regeneration
of Kieselgur Sludge With Biogas Production |
Gladchenko M.A., Gaydamaka S.N.,
Maslova O.V., Kornilova A.A.
At food and other industries, large batches of spent kieselguhr are formed at the fi ltration stages, the reserves of which
are steadily decreasing. Conditions have been established for the implementation of a new approach to the regeneration
of kieselguhr, which includes the following stages: 1) Extraction of 75 % of organic substances into the liquid fraction in
4 hours by chemical pretreatment of kieselguhr sludge from starch-molasses production with a 1 % solution of NaHCO3
at
40 °C and washing the kieselguhr three times with water; 2) Biocatalytic transformation of the resulting liquid fraction with
64.4 gCOD/l in an anaerobic reactor with upfl ow mesophilic sludge (UASB) to produce biogas with a methane content of
80 %, COD removal effi ciency – 93 %, biogas effi ciency – 91 %; 3) Heat treatment at 550 °C (using biogas) of kieselguhr
purifi ed from organic components until 100 % regenerated kieselguhr is obtained. During the implementation of the
regeneration process, a balance between environmental safety and economic effi ciency was successfully achieved.
Keywords: spent kieselguhr, sodium bicarbonate, anaerobic fermentation, biogas, UASB reactor, starch molasses production.
