Assessment of the Mutual Infl uence of Avalanche
Processes and Vegetation in the Southern Part
of Sakhalin Island Sakhalin Island |
Bobrova D.A.
The paper evaluates the consequences of avalanches for vegetation in avalanche-hosted areas, as well as the results of studies of the
impact of vegetation on the snow cover height and snow column parameters. It was revealed that dense coniferous forest reduces
snow accumulation by 40-50%, while deciduous or larch forest promotes its maximum accumulation. The recrystallization rate
in avalanche pits covered with dense dark coniferous forest is 5 times higher than in unforested avalanche pits covered with Kuril
bamboo, and the recrystallization rate in avalanche pits covered with herbaceous vegetation is slightly higher than in avalanche
pits covered with Kuril bamboo. It was noted that tree and shrub vegetation in the ridgeline part of marine terraces prevents
the formation of snow cornices. The obtained research data can be used in the development of avalanche control structures on
Sakhalin Island.
Keywords: Sakhalin Island, snow avalanches, vegetation, recrystallization of snow strata.
