Proposals on the Location, Composition and Equipment of Control and Calibration Polygons in Landslide-Prone Areas (using the Example of o. Sakhalin)

To effectively solve applied problems related to landslide processes (inventory, cataloging, forecasting and mapping of landslide hazards),
it is necessary to use remote sensing data. These data, which contain information about the geophysical parameters of the surface, require
machine processing. Even taking into account the progress in remote sensing processing methods, subsatellite observations - measurements
of the characteristics of test objects and test sites - are still critically important for assessing the reliability of both the source data and their
processing products. Using the Sakhalin Island territory as an example, a methodology for selecting test sites for satellite observations has
been developed and tested as part of a study of the dynamics of landslide processes using remote sensing data. In addition, the composition
and methodology of collecting the geophysical parameters of the Earth's surface at the selected test sites are described in detail. The data
obtained were compared with representative remote sensing materials from open sources (ALOSPALSAR 2 and Landsat 8, 9 images),
which made it possible to verify fi eld observations and clarify the interpretation of satellite data. Proposals have been developed for the
organization of the work of control and calibration polygons. The main results of field research have confirmed: the possibility of forming
representative datasets on the subject-specific features of landslide sites; the reliability of recording the spectral characteristics of the
surface in landslide areas; the effectiveness of the combined approach (field observations + remote sensing) for monitoring landslide
processes.
