Development of an Urban Acoustic Impact Assessment
System Using an Internet of Things Platform |
Kabonen A.V., Simonova A.A., Kuvshinov K.A., Grafova E.O.
This study assessed the urban environment's ecological status on two high-traffic streets in a city of 250 000 inhabitants
located in Northwestern Russia. The assessment was conducted using a multisensory electronic device managed by an
IoT platform. Data collected from measurements in the city's central area along two key thoroughfares, from April to
October 2024, were analyzed. A mechanism for identifying changes in noise levels at different times of day during the
monitored months is presented. Statistically signifi cant noise levels were identifi ed and processed in the R programming
environment using basic functions and a two independent samples comparison method. The reliability of differences in
statistical indicators was assessed using the Shapiro-Wilk and Fisher's tests. For comparing arithmetic means, Student's
t-test and Welch's t-test were applied. The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test was used for cases where samples deviated from
normality. The resulting boxplot diagrams are provided, allowing for the comparison of value distributions across different
samples. The developed and tested hardware-software complex «Smart Ecosystems» enables the identification of times for
significant peak noise exposures. The research results contribute to the development of environmental monitoring tools and
the formation of a scientifically based approach to managing the acoustic environment of a modern city.
