Problems and Prospects of Reclamation
of Accumulated Environmental Damage Sites
in Areas of Intensive Mineral Extraction |
Karmanov M.B.
The article examines the environmental and institutional challenges associated with the reclamation of sites of accumulated environmental damage
formed in regions of intensive mineral extraction. The study is conducted as a review-analytical synthesis of contemporary scientific publications
and practical cases of environmental restoration, within which reclamation is interpreted not as an isolated environmental procedure but as
a comprehensive process of managing technogenic landscapes. The analysis draws on studies addressing the environmental consequences of
mining activities, technologies for restoring disturbed territories, biological mechanisms for stabilizing technogenic substrates, and environmental
monitoring methods applied to post-mining landscapes. The findings indicate that the key limitations of reclamation are determined not only by
technological constraints but also by institutional and managerial conditions affecting the implementation of restoration projects. The synthesis
of empirical and analytical evidence demonstrates that the sustainability of reclamation depends not on individual technical measures but on the
coordinated application of engineering, chemical, and biological approaches aimed at stabilizing landforms, forming a soil substrate, and restoring
vegetation cover. Particular attention is given to interpreting accumulated environmental damage as a systemic outcome of long-term interactions
between technogenic processes, natural conditions, and management practices. The study shows that the effectiveness of environmental restoration
is influenced not only by the technologies employed but also by the institutional architecture governing reclamation projects, including mechanisms
of responsibility, financing, and long-term monitoring. The article may be of interest to researchers in environmental geography, land reclamation,
and sustainable resource management, as well as to practitioners involved in the development and implementation of projects aimed at eliminating
accumulated environmental damage.
